How to Patch Test a New Skin Care Product

A patch test is a simple way to check whether a new product may irritate your skin before you use it across your face or body.

Choose a small test area

Apply a small amount of the product to clean skin on your inner arm or behind the ear, following the product instructions. Use a place where you can observe the area easily.

Wait and observe

Leave the product on as directed and watch for redness, itching, burning, swelling or a rash over the next day or two. Stop using the product if you react.

Introduce one product at a time

Do not begin several new products together. If your skin reacts, you will not know which product caused the problem.
