How to Build a Simple Wash-Day Hair Routine

A wash-day routine works best when it matches your scalp, hair texture and schedule. You do not need a shelf full of products to create a reliable routine.

Start with your scalp

Focus shampoo on the scalp, where oil and product build-up collect. Massage gently with your fingertips rather than scratching with your nails, then rinse thoroughly.

Condition the lengths

Apply conditioner mainly from the mid-lengths to the ends, where hair is often drier. Leave it on for the time suggested on the product, then rinse until the hair feels soft but not coated.

Choose a drying method you can repeat

Blot hair with a soft towel or T-shirt instead of rough rubbing. If you use heat, use a heat protectant and choose the lowest temperature that gets the result you want.

Keep note of what works

Notice how your hair feels one or two days after washing. If it feels dry, add more conditioning. If it feels weighed down, use less product or focus conditioner lower on the hair.

A routine should make hair care easier, not stressful. Small adjustments made consistently are more valuable than constantly changing every product.
