Heat Styling Basics: How to Be Kinder to Your Hair
Heat styling can be part of a normal routine. The goal is not perfection; it is using heat thoughtfully so your hair stays as comfortable and manageable as possible.
Start with dry hair when required
Use hot tools only as they are intended. Straighteners and curling tools are generally designed for dry hair, while blow-drying techniques vary by hair type and product instructions.
Use a heat protectant
Apply a heat-protecting product evenly before styling, following its label. It does not make hair invincible, but it is a useful layer in a careful routine.
Lower heat can be enough
Start with the lowest effective temperature and avoid repeatedly passing over the same section. Smaller, well-combed sections often style more efficiently.
Balance styled days with gentle days
On non-styling days, choose simple styles and avoid tight pulling. If hair becomes noticeably dry, brittle or breaks easily, reduce heat and seek professional advice.
